Creative Voice is an arts journalism project facilitated by Artrain, the wonderful Ann Arbor based organization that promotes the arts through exhibitions, education, and community building programs. Founder and editor of Creative Voice, Jennifer Conlin, arrived with a small production crew to shoot footage and collect interviews during our March First Friday artist reception for Cheryl Dawdy.
A University of Michigan graduate in printmaking and figure drawing, Dawdy now uses collage as her prominent form of image making. The pieces start from her ever growing collection of papers, letters, and postcards – the ephemera of life that are then skillfully arranged and layered into finished works. Her images evoke the sensation of a memory or dream – fragments that combine into a unified whole, even if the message itself remains a mystery.
Cheryl lives and works in Ann Arbor, and is often recognized as a member of The Chenille Sisters, singing and songwriting as part of the trio more than 30 years. “It’s been pointed out to me that collage, like harmony, is a kind of balance between very different influences. Sometimes, when feeling in harmony myself, I agree! A favorite moment for me was making a collage for the cover of our 8th album, True to Life.”
“My work often begins with an emotional response to a printed image, a scrap of paper, or even a small swatch of color. Ultimately, it takes on meaning for me and a direction is revealed. For the last few years I’ve been experimenting with new techniques, transitioning from primarily pre-printed papers to a variety of materials and approaches including transfers, layering with tissue paper, “faux” encaustics, and creating my own imagery…” – Cheryl Dawdy
